It’s because landlords love Duane Reades: they’re guaranteed to pay their leases and they don’t piss off neighbors like a bar or restaurant.  Almost any commercial landlord would love a Duane Reade tenant.  Also, people in New York average like 5 prescriptions (I once dated a girl with a purse FULL of Xanax.  She was cool.) so yeah, we need our Rxes.
